Piles reinforcement

Asymmetric piles in large concrete structures. Study and practical implementation.

COMPANY
ERSI Group

PRODUCTIVE SECTOR
Construction

Consulting and research on the design and implementation of asymmetric reinforcement of piles in large concrete structures.

The main challenges are the design of asymmetric reinforcement of piles with suitable N-M interaction diagrams in the equilibrium equations at failure for the structure to be designed and built, but using asymmetric piles instead of the usual ones, with the corresponding saving of material (mainly steel).

The main mathematical techniques employed consist of the application and adjustment of the appropriate physical equilibrium equations, which are greatly complicated by the lack of symmetry, accompanied by appropriate optimization techniques, in order to minimize the use of steel in the piles for the design and construction of big civil projects.

The main results of the collaboration with the company was the theoretical study and posterior implementation in an executable computer program of all the complicated physical and mathematical considerations and computations.

In order to can replace the usual symmetric piles considered in big civil engineering projects by the equivalent asymmetric ones, with similar behavior in terms of resistance and N-M equilibrium diagrams, but with a significant saving in the use of steel in its construction.
