Statement from the EU-Maths-IN Executive Board members on the ongoing Ukraine invasion

The members of the Executive Board of EU-Maths-IN, would like to express their deep concern about the war of aggression on free, independent Ukraine, which has now been ongoing for over 100 days. We are united in condemning a senseless war, which is in violation of international law, and the violence against the Ukrainian people waged by the current Russian government. EU-Maths-IN declares its full solidarity with the Ukrainian people in their struggle against the invasion of their country. EU-Maths-IN is also in solidarity with those in Russia who protest against the war and are arrested or have to leave their country.

At a time when humanity is facing major common problems, such as climate change or the COVID-19 pandemic, we believe that efforts should be directed towards addressing the challenges that humanity must face in the coming years, and forgetting the ancestral and primitive approaches of subduing neighboring countries by force. After World War 2, with the creation of the EU and after the fall of the Iron Curtain, no one could imagine a war in Europe. And now a war has been raging in Europe for over 100 days. Ukraine is not only defending itself but also European values, our values. Values like Human Dignity, Liberty, Democracy, Equality, Rule of Law, and Respect for Human Rights including Minority Rights.

EU-Maths-IN is the association of national organizations to boost mathematics for the industry in Europe. Our successful work is based on the cooperation of scientists from the whole “geographical Europe”, including Ukraine and Russia. Any war is senseless and the consequences of war, besides the many casualties, are the disruption of scientific and technological progress through the destruction of infrastructure or through political and economic isolation. As an international community, all scientists should work together not only to end this war of aggression but also to reduce the risk of further wars.

Mathematical research and teaching cross ideologies and borders, it will continue to serve as a bridge between nations. EU-Maths-IN will continue to be open to all mathematicians who respect fundamental European and Mankind values.
