Abstract : We present our recent contributions to computational cardiology and precision medicine, with emphasis on multiphysics and multiscale modeling of the human heart. In particular, we couple several differential models that describe the physical processes determining the whole heart function, with focus on integrated electromechanical and electromechano-fluid models for the numerical simulation of the cardiac physiology. Our digital heart features state-of-the-art and accurate mathematical models, accurate space and time discretization methods, other than computationally efficient numerical coupling schemes. We present numerical simulations in the high performance computing framework, ranging from ventricular to whole heart simulations. We also present cardiac electromechanics emulators based on Machine Learning for real-time and accurate simulations towards the construction of cardiac digital twin. We also propose some clinical applications wherein our computational model of the human heart is successfully used to improve diagnosis and treatment, other than for supporting critical clinical decisions.
Short Bio : Luca Dede’ is Associate Professor at MOX, Mathematics Department, Politecnico di Milano, where he also graduated in Mathematical Engineering. He held positions of postdoctoral researchers and lecturer at The University of Texas at Austin and Ècole Polytechnique Fèdèrale de Lausanne. He is author and co-author of more than 80 journal articles and scientific contributions, other than of a scientific book. He co-supervised about 10 PhD students and he lectures several courses at Politecnico di Milano. His expertise is in numerical analysis and numerical methods for partial differential equations, scientific computing, high performance computing, computational fluid dynamics, mathematical and numerical modeling for precision medicine and healthcare solutions, computational cardiology, digital twinning, scientific machine learning. He is scientific coordinator of the ERC AdG project “iHEART – An Integrated Heart Model for the Simulation of the Cardiac Function” 2017-2022 (P.I. A. Quarteroni, program Horizon 2020) and participates to several projects from funding agencies and industry.

Algorithmic speed-ups outperform hardware speed-ups

Algorithmic speed-ups developed by the mathematical sciences clearly outperform hardware speed-ups over the past 40 years:

  • I would rather have today’s algorithms on yesterday’s computers than vice versa
  • If we would rely solely on performance improvements in hardware, we would now be doing the simulations of the 1990s!
  • We need mathware besides software and hardware
